16-17 MAY CONCERT - SENIOR
Season Finale Concerts
Join Maestro Eylar and the orchestra in the final concert series of the season as they unveil a new concept in programming! Maestro Eylar will feature each section of the orchestra in individual works highlighting every family of the symphony orchestra, before bringing the entire orchestra together for the season's rousing finale, Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1 by Georges Enesco. Thrill to the rich sounds of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for String Orchestra, and feel the immense energy and rhythmic vitality of Nathan Daughtrey's Sizzle for percussion ensemble, directed by CYS Percussion Director Artie Storch. Maestro Eylar will also direct works for the brass section and the woodwind section. We are delighted to have four works programmed for our senior soloists this year, including Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, Sarasate's Introduction and Tarantella, the Concerto for Two Bassoons and Orchestra by Vanhal, and the Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra by Rosauro. A truly exciting and special way to end our 65th season!

Gregor Dairaghi, age 17, started playing bassoon at the age of 12 with Yueh Chou, with whom he has since studied. This is his fifth year with the California Youth Symphony and second year as Co-Principal Bassoonist in the Senior Orchestra.
Morgan Wu is a senior at Lynbrook High School and the current co-concertmaster of California Youth Symphony. She has studied violin since the age of 3 beginning with Diane Egli and currently with Danielle Tarley. This is her 11th season in CYS and her 7th season in Senior Orchestra.
Elvin Hsieh started learning the violin with Xiaoli Chen at age five, and has been a member of CYS for five years. His past teachers include Li Lin and Ian Swensen, and he currently studies with Chen Zhao.
Kyle Jung started playing percussion at the age of 9. He is currently studying under the guidance of Artie Storch. This is his fourth year as a member of the California Youth Symphony.
Graduating Senior Concerto Competition
Each year CYS holds a competition for its current members to select outstanding graduating seniors to be provided with an opportunity to perform with the orchestra on its season finale concerts. Winning the Concerto Competition is considered one of the highest honors at the California Youth Symphony.
While CYS is pleased to motivate and reward young musicians, the annual Concerto Competition is often more than a platform for students seeking a future in music. While many past winners have gone on to pursue music professionally, a number of competition winners have pursued education and careers in fields as diverse as biology, physics, and engineering. The California Youth Symphony considers it a pleasure to work with and inspire some of the leading minds of tomorrow and cultivate a lifelong appreciation of the arts as they become audience members of the future.
